As an astronomer working in Marseille (Massalia), a city funded by the Phoceans, themselves sons of the antique Athens, I feel the obligation to defend the Athens observatory. In my opinion, it has to stay within Greece's network of research centers in order to continue to act as a Pharos for the worldwide science

this decision is a disgrace based on a fundamental misunderstanding

I´m signing because the move of NOA from GSRI to the MCCCP is a wrong political decision they will impoverish the strong scientific culture of Greece.

I am fundamentally against the way that our government handles Sciences in my country and this is just an example of poor treatment.

Most of NOA's research, as well as Astronomy as a science, have nothing to do with "Climate Crisis and Civil Protection" (aside from the influence of the Sun's variability on climate). It is a research center that properly belongs to GSRI and that only ignoramuses would place in such a ministry.

I vote for helping: preserve the National Observatory of Athens as a vital research center in Greece, ensuring its continued contributions to scientific advancement within its rightful home, the General Secretariat of Research & Innovation.

Over the years I have closely collaborated with NOA's researchers, allowing to implement many of their advances on earthquake engineering on industrial projects. Changing ONA's status a research institution would limit this type of collaboration with industry.

The decision to move the Athens Observatory to a ministry that has nothing to do with it will be extremely detrimental. Greek scientists face many difficulties and struggle to work with meagre resources. They do not need senseless bureaucracy to impede their work further.

I protest against the policies of the current Administration, which, contrary to international practice, to the advice from the National Council for Research, Technology and Innovation and to the greek scientific community has decided:

- previously, to move the General Secreteriat for Research & Innovation and all associated Research Centers from the Ministry of Education to the Ministry of Development, creating a gap in the Greek higher education and research community

- now, to move NOA from the Ministry of Development to MCCCP

These actions will have a long lasting negative impact to the whole Greek system of research and innovation, as it was recovering from under-funding and brain-drain during the years of the financial crisis.

I'm signing because I agree with the NOA scientists/researchers.

I believe that the way in which research organizations and institutes are treated is unacceptable and does not correspond to any of the aims and purposes of the research.
The purpose of research organizations is not to serve short-term party or political expediency, even if it is the government itself.

Moving NOA from GSRI to the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection seems like a poor choice and shows a complete lack of understanding of the role NOA have as a research center.

The decision most likely will change the nature of the Observatory

Changing a winning team for reason not connected to the team is rarely a good idea. Why don't they merge GRSI with MCCCP instead of playing with the lower level?

Detaching of the National Observatory of Athens from the network of research centers in Greece will alter the research character of NOA, downgrading it to the service of the new ministry, will create suffocating conditions for the further development of research activity and will have negative consequences on working conditions of its staff.

The National Observatory of Athens, with its rich history and pivotal role in advancing scientific knowledge, faces a critical threat due to a recent decision to relocate it to the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection. This move not only contradicts the fundamental nature of NOA's research mission but also endangers its trajectory of growth and excellence. Preserving NOA within the General Secretariat of Research & Innovation is crucial for safeguarding its contributions to scientific advancement and ensuring the continued flourishing of research in Greece. Stand with us to protect the National Observatory of Athens – a loss for NOA is a loss for us all.
