It is important to preserve this institution (which I visited in the past) as a research center for the sake of the position of Greece in the international scientific community..

This decision poses an imminent threat to the advancement of research in Greece and to ΝΟΑ itself as a research center.

I think it Is a mistake to move NOA to MCCCP. Research is fundamental for understanding causes and effects of natural hazards and should be rooted in the research and innovation system. Within the civili défense realm NOA will be absorved by the reaction focus of the resposnse system.

Hugo Yepes (Quito, 2023-11-20)

I agree completely with the petition

Research can only function in its natural legal / organizational environment, which enables national and international links with all services required for its growth and thriving.

I'm signing because NOA has a long history in research in Greece with many collaborations in Europe personally dating back to 1994. The vast majority of its mission is research and moving under a more strict umbrella of Civil Protection will not benefit anyone

Damiano Pesaresi (Udine, 2023-11-20)

As a former employee of NOA (from 1999-2014) where I have served as the Director of the then Institute for Space Applications and Remote Sensing (ISARS), and a Research Director, I am shocked to learn that the Greek government has decided to move NOA from GRSI to MCCP. NOA is the oldest research institution of modern Greece stake and must remain as such. I fully agree with the statement issued by the President of NOA, Prof. M. Plionis where it is clearly explained why this should never happen. I might add that I returned back to Greece from the University of British Columbia (UBC) in Canada, where I was a Professor at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering because of NOA's status and prestige. Let me reassure you that, if NOA would have belonged in a ministry other than Ministry of Development, most probably I would never has considered to join NOA as the Director of ISARS.

It is unfair

I am signing this petition because I recognize the scientific importance of the National Observatory of Athens and I believe that it should not be separated from Greece's network of research centers.

Rodrigo von Marttens (Salvador, 2023-11-20)

I really convinced of the high value of the NOA and I do think that it should stay supervised by the General Secretariat of Research & Innovation (GSRI) of the Ministry of Development to fullfill its mission

Carlo Laj (Paris, 2023-11-20)

I know the quality of research done at NOA, and I find the possibility of such a change really disturbing.

Vincenzo Andretta (Naples, 2023-11-20)

I am against the detachment of NOA from Greece's national research network

Thomas Bisbas (Hangzhou, 2023-11-20)

The mission of NOA cannot be accomplished under the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, whose goals and procedures are completely different.

Luis Bellot Rubio (Granada, 2023-11-20)

#872

I know the reliability of NOA and its researcher, I use their data, I strongly believe it is a research center of international importance and Greece has to be proud of it and support it.

Giuliana Rossi (Trieste, 2023-11-20)

#875

Forcing NOA to become an operational organisation to bolster the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection (MCCCP) is in my opinion neither good for MCCCP or NOA. MCCCP can best benefit from NOA by supporting NOA's research activities for which it is world renowned and by creating its own organisation by soliciting skilled staff motivated to build MCCCP capabilities.

NOA is an academic research centre and should remain under the GSRI like all academic research system in Greece. Services to the state are provided anatway.

Vassilis Kilikoglou (Athens, 2023-11-20)

NOA does not deserve to be put in the category of institutions in charge of solving immediate society problems. It is a well-known and well-respected Organization in charge of fundamental research so necessary for the advancement of humanity.

Jean-Claude Vial (Orsay, 2023-11-20)

#905

NOA is an outstanding European Research Organization. Its contribution to surveillance and hazards deserves continuous scientific research and monitoring. NOA should remain a public research institution.

Massimo Cocco (Rome, 2023-11-20)

It is a bad idea to kill the National Observatory!

Lukasz Wyrzykowski (Warsaw, 2023-11-20)

#919

I am signing because NOA is a vital research center that serves Greece and the larger scientific community in its present role.

Joseph Foy (Tempe, 2023-11-20)

#920

I am signing this as the government should unify the research area and to divide it in small units, under different ministries.

Fotios Katsaros (Athens, 2023-11-20)

#922

I support the efforts for helping to preserve the National Observatory of Athens as a vital research center in Greece.

Vedad Pasic (Tuzla, 2023-11-20)

#926

I believe the goals of the NOA are better served under a Ministry responsible for Research

Jun Miro (Leiden, 2023-11-20)

#929

Given the primary scope of such an observatory, it should be managed as a fundamental research facility. Detaching it from this R&I Secretariat will also divert it from its primary purpose and may cut it from funding sources and synergies that match its expertise and objectives.

Frédéric Clette (Brussels, 2023-11-20)

#930

-A research institute should be allowed to set its own research agenda.
-The scope of the National Observatory is not close to the body that is planned to be absorbed.

Mihalis Vrekoussis (Bremen, 2023-11-20)

#940

I'm signing because I think that a research centre should be independent of political control and act supportively to the political decisions by providing information and not controlled by the ministry.

Agni Vamvaka (Konitsa, 2023-11-20)

#941

I was an adjunct researcher at the Observatory for several years and I have still ongoing collaborations. I believe that the Observatory is clearly a research institution and should remain as such.

The National Observatory of Athens contribute a lot of intertionality to the Astronomy, Astrophysics fundamental research.

I am signing this petition as a Greek citizen and researcher working abroad.

Christina Plainaki (Rome, 2023-11-20)

#955

The proposed move would be bad for Greek research.

James Klimchuk (Washington, DC, 2023-11-20)

#965

NOA is mostly carrying out fundamental research which is unrelated to Climate or Civil Protection. Its natural place is part of GSRI. Moving it will jeopardize its unique scientific position and future contribution to science.

Nir Shaviv (Jerusalem, 2023-11-20)

#967

This is an important organization for Greece and the Global multi hazard scientific community. Its work is impactful and useful. Please continue the operation

Sissy Nikolaou (New York, 2023-11-20)

#973

I sign while I am convinced that the National Observatory of Athens is a strong institution in research collaborating since a long time with many institutions in Europe and broader. Therefore it should remain under the supervision of Research and Innovation to keep this place and continue his contribution on research.

Anne Deschamps (Valbonne, 2023-11-20)

#975

NOA is renowned as an esteemed organization committed to conducting essential fundamental research that significantly contributes to the advancement of human knowledge. Placing NOA within the realm of institutions responsible for addressing pressing societal problems would be highly inappropriate.

Salvatore Orlando (Palermo, 2023-11-20)

#976

The National Observatory of Athens is a wonderful public research center with an excellent global reputation in the international astronomy community. It should continue to be operated as an active research center. It should not be moved into an organization that is not focused on research.

Richard White (Baltimore, 2023-11-20)

#978

The excellent work that is being done there.

Philip Massey (Flagstaff, AZ, 2023-11-20)

#979

I am signing this petition because I believe that NOA can contribute more to the scientific advancement within the General Secretariat of Research & Innovation.
